An instruction manual necessary for the use of Gainsborough's products. 126 pp.

This is a "how to" text explaining the use of Gainsborough's products in the restoration of oil paintings. It includes procedures for cleaning, varnish and linoxyn removal, conditioning, canvas patching, lining, strip lining, consolidating loose paint, facing, filling in repaired tears, inpainting, and varnishing of oil paintings. There are also chapters on the use of ultraviolet light for inspection of artwork; restoration of picture frames, including cleaning, casting ornamental pieces and antiquing; technical tips and more. The illustrations throughout show techniques and procedures to be used as well as "before" and "after" views of paintings.

NEUTRALIZER

Necessary for stopping the cleaning action of all of our oil painting cleaning and varnish removal products. Apply liberally to remove all cleaning solvent residue. Can be used to dilute the strength of Gainsborough's cleaners, varnish removers, Linoxyn Remover and Lining Compound Remover.

EMULSION CLEANER

PC-27

For removal of household dirt, tobacco smoke, and coal smoke from oil paintings. Use PC-11 Neutralizer to stop the cleaning action.

This Vulpex and spirit solution attacks and emulsifies dirt, fats, fatty oils, mineral oils, waxes and hydrocarbons from oil paintings. Use PC-11 Neutralizer to stop the cleaning action.

PC-89

LINING COMPOUND REMOVER

For removal of excess PC-1035 Lining Compound and PC-1034 Facing Compound from an oil painting's surface after lining and/or facing. (PC-11 Neutralizer is recommended instead of PC-89 for more recently painted works, sensitive paint surfaces, or when patching.)

VARNISH REMOVER

For removal of aged damar varnish, and some mastic or copal varnishes from oil paintings. Use PC-11 Neutralizer to stop the cleaning action.

PC-127

VARNISH SOFTENER

For the softening and removal of aged varnish films. After varnish has softened, remove with PC-123 Varnish Remover. Use PC-11 Neutralizer to stop the cleaning action.

PC-151

MASTIC VARNISH REMOVER

For removal of aged mastic varnish. Use PC-11 Neutralizer to stop the cleaning action.

PC-211

LINOXYN REMOVER

For removal of aged linoxyn films (linseed oil) from oil paintings. Use Linoxyn Remover with utmost care to avoid softening and removing paint. Use PC-11 Neutralizer to stop the cleaning action.

PC-1021

CONDITIONER, Low Odor

For reconditioning dried and brittle canvas on old oil paintings. Do not line or patch painting for two weeks after use to ensure good adhesion. Do not use on newly inpainted or varnished paintings. Use PC-11 Neutralizer to remove any excess Conditioner.

PC-1030

DAMAR GLOSS VARNISH

Fine quality natural damar gloss varnish used to protect oil paintings from the elements and bring out the true colors of the pigments. Apply with a 2" high quality varnish brush. Can be thinned with artist's gum turpentine to make a retouch varnish.

FV-1

GLOSS FINISHING VARNISH

A synthetic conservation gloss varnish for oil paintings. Colorless and reversible. Apply with a 2" high quality varnish brush or an airbrush. Can be thinned with VM&P naphtha (or artist's mineral spirits if VM&P naphtha is unavailable) to make a retouch varnish.

MV-1

MATTE VARNISH

A synthetic conservation matte varnish for oil paintings. Colorless and reversible. Apply with a 2" high quality varnish brush or an airbrush. Can be thinned with VM&P naphtha (or artist's mineral spirits if VM&P naphtha is unavailable) to make a retouch varnish.

SGV-1

SEMI-GLOSS VARNISH

A synthetic conservation semi-gloss varnish for oil paintings. Colorless and reversible. Apply with a 2" high quality varnish brush or an airbrush. Can be thinned with VM&P naphtha (or artist's mineral spirits if VM&P naphtha is unavailable) to make a retouch varnish.

PC-1034

FACING COMPOUND

(Pre-mixed wax-resin/iron-on type)
For use in facing: Adhering the front of an oil painting to canvas. Reversible by using heat. A good facing method to use when lining a painting to a new canvas with PC-1035 Lining Compound. Must be melted slowly at low heat (approx. 200°F/warm setting) in an electric frying or melting pot.

LINING COMPOUND: CONSERVATION LINING WAX

(Pre-mixed wax-resin/iron-on type)
Finest quality wax/resin adhesive used in the traditional method of lining (adhering) an old oil painting to a new canvas. Reversible by using heat. Suggested for lining when painting is flaking and shows bare canvas, has cracks that will soon lose paint, has multiple holes or tears, and/or has weak original canvas which needs a new support. Also used for adhering a linen patch to repair a torn canvas. Must be melted slowly at low heat (approx. 200°F/warm setting) in an electric frying or melting pot. Remove excess Lining Compound with PC-89 Lining Compound Remover. (Approximately 0.035 oz. of Lining Compound needed per square inch with M-4011 canvas. One pound covers an area of approximately 21" x 21".)

PC-1111

PICTURE REPAIR PUTTY

For use in filling areas of missing paint, and repaired tears and holes in oil paintings to prepare the surface for inpainting. Can be mixed with oil paint to add color, and sanded or textured to match painting's surface.
